Hi I am in the process of buying a XT to learn to shoot with and hopefully shoot port. and fashion I was told that the 50mm f/1.8 is a great one for this and was wondering what are some other ones ?

I could list three lenses that I think are great, but they're all over $1000. What's your price range for great?

EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS
EF 70-200 F2.8 L IS
EF 85mm F1.2

:er:

70-200mm f/2.8L IS - fast focus, incredible IQ, almost dummy proof (me proof) ... I love how fast it AF

24-70 f/2.8L or 24-105 f/4L IS - do not have either because stuck trying to decide which one is "better"

50mm f/1.8 - BEST lens for the buck

This would be what I would view as the top lenses for Canon, just not three of them. I selected these because they are what I own and use.

Canon Lenses:
10-22mm f3.5-4.5
16-35mm f2.8L II
24-70mm f2.8L
70-200 f2.7L
35mm f1.4L
50mm f1.4
85mm f1.8
100mm f2.0 Macro
135mm f2L
200mm f2.8L
EF 1.4X II

EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS
EF 70-200 F2.8 L IS
EF 85mm F1.2

:er:

I second on this list. Tack on the 50 f/1.8 while your at it since it's only another $90 quid. Though the f/1.2 or f/1.4 would be better.

The new arrival 55-250mm IS is cheap and good .

I agree with all above... if you can afford, buy some "L" lenses... are awesome...
About the 50mm lens, its a must... it's very cheap and it's very good :D

is the 50mm lens you are referring to the Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II ? Its on 89.99 at Dell and wasn't sure whether to get it or not. Should I?

Usually $79.99 on b & H. There's a link at the top of the forums. Excellent service and superb, legit prices. I've spent probably $3000 there over the past year and on my last transaction, there was a shipping mishap on UPS's part. B&H took care of the claim and reversing the charge and everything for me. Good Stuff.

And the lens is great for the price as well.

Thanks. B & H is pretty awesome.

Would you say this lens has more applications than the 18-55mm that came with the camera?

My budget is up to 200 dollars per lens
The 50mm F1.8 is just about the only lens I would recommend that is under $200.

Any lens can have any number of applications. On one hand, the zoom...is well, a zoom. It's convenient and it's wide enough to be used indoors and for landscapes etc.
The 50mm F1.8, on the other hand, has a large maximum aperture and pretty good optics. A large aperture allows you to use a faster shutter speed, which is good for action shots or for shooting when the light levels are low. Also, a large aperture gives you the ability to use a shallow Depth of Field.
