So I've been wanting a D800 for a while now. I've asked around. As of last week Camera House have said they have 150 on back order and even the store owner has been waiting for more than 8 weeks for his, so don't believe them when they say 6-week lead time. Anyway today I figured if I don't pre-order this thing I'll never get it so I went into a different camera store. I went up to the counter and started the pre-order process, and then I got lucky.
While one of the staff was sorting our my pre-order another one came up and dropped a D800 body on the counter. Turns out that a few moments earlier a customer came to pickup their D800, but wanted it with a kit lens. Except.... the store had a discount package for a body+kit, and the guy ordered body only so if he wanted the kit lens too it would have cost him more than the package. With that the customer apparently decided to change his pre-order meaning that they had one D800 spare
Long story short I'm now in hospital with a cracked disc from doing cartwheels around the store.
That last bit was a joke.
Anyway first impressions are great. The whole "lens won't resolve it" it entirely unfounded. My 10 year old 28-70 does the job just fine, as does every other lens in my kit save for the cheap sigma ultrawide. High ISO performance is better than I expected too. I was initially in the sceptical camp and thinking of getting a D700. Now I'm glad I didn't.
