right, i'm buying a camera online. just something to take basic holiday pictures with, the description says "6 million pixel output/ 3.1 million pixel effective"

is this a posh way of saying "we're cheating you out of 3 million pixels"?

Basically.

Take an 8x10 picture off your wall. Cut off 4" horizontally and 5" vertically. You now have an 8x10" picture that is output at 4x5" effective
