Touch screen reduces need for cable release?

So, never used a camera with a touch screen - yet I have a touch screen which flips out and you can touch it to fire the shutter.

With a camera on a tripod, and a gentle touch - and I mean very gentle - will this, do you think, reduce the need for a shutter release cable? or should I get one anyhow?

I would still use a cable release.

I think you should use the self timer function until you get a release cable. They are quite cheap, so get one.

Not really. The times where a tripod release is needed because you want a totally crisp shot are going to be situations where the the smallest of motions will cause trouble; so even a really light touch might be a problem even though its less than the effort needed for the shutter button.

Also don't forget that shutter releases let you be away from the camera; thus letting you get selfie-shots without the timer (and rushing) or in situations where the camera needs to be a remote distance from you

On top of the long exposure you can do with the cable release.You may want to hold the shutter open until your sensors starts smoking.
