Jaemie, The tractors in this event will not be seeing a crop field anytime soon. They are modified just enough to make them toys, but not enough to compete with the fire breathing pro tractors. Now, the stock truck pull class is another story. When I pulled in the gate, the attendant told me the Pull-N-Trucks needed to use the other gate. My long bed, F250 4x4 crew cab diesel truck with custom dog box and several layers of dirt looked like all the other trucks pulling that night. This event was about as close to the track as fans could hope to get and there were people, vehicles and equipment lining the track. Shooting from the end of the track wasn't much better as they has staged all the trucks and tractors at the other end. So, it was hard to isolate just the tractor that was pulling. We were able to stand about the mid point, close enough to get the start and a close up as they roared down the track at 20 mph.
Jwbryson1, Thank you. Most of the photos were taken with a 70-200 2.8 Tamron lens. Somewhere between F4 and F6. I could have opened the lens up but I wanted to make sure I was getting the entire tractor and driver in focus. Same on the ISO, I was really worried about noise and thought all the dust and smoke would make the issue worse. I understand your point and I should have tried several different settings. My wife's co-worker is going to check to see if we can us flash and is trying to get us some pit passes for a better organized, bigger event at a much larger fair. Since they harness race at night there, I hope the lighting will be better.
