Travel Lenses with the D700

I travel quite a bit and ended up buying the 28-300 VR, it's not great but it's good enough.

If I had to carry 2 lenses and needed to travel light it would be the 28-300 and the 50 1.4. If I'm not worried about weight I carry my 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 VRII.

On my vacas, I bring my d90 w/ 18-105, 50, sb600 and sb800. It supplies 99% of what I need to do outside of professional arena. At work, its a different story, 24-70 is my primary on d700. Depending on the studio I'm working for, I might use good ol' 28-105 3.5-4.5 on my d700. Range is decent and IQ is pretty good, even at wider apertures. I happened to like this lens very much and would even use it more on Dx except that 28mm on dx is a bit tight for some situations I'm in.

I Have been singing the praises of the 28-300 since I bought mine, and to be fair will continue to do so, but I have found its limits, while on a worksop we got the unexpected opportunity to shoot some motor sports and the lens let me down badly, while shooting tracking shots I think about only 10% of the images will be usable, if I took the same shots with my 70-200 VRII that number would be closer to 80%. But its still a great lens all the same, just has limitations as everything does, and I will still leave my 70-200 behind when going on most tours.
