Thanks for the crops and comments. I left the uploaded as is because I felt the composition worked as follows: Sky to sun flare to tree to light pathway to dark strip at the bottom to the left trees and back again to the sky.

I can see the effectiveness of the crop with a single tree, and think it works rather nicely. Ditto with the next crop, especially since you were working with the lines of the trees on the hill.
