I love my Manfrotto 3001, but one thing that really bothers me is that there is no way to turn the column horizontally like this:

Does anyone know if I can just get the thingie that is on top which permits the column to be placed in the horizontal position? If not, I do have a little doohicky with a 3/8" screw on it that can be inserted into where the column goes - could I safely attach a superclamp to this doohicky?

nah. I'm pretty sure that a $20 superclamp would work just fine. Just wanted to see if there was an adapter.
