Looking for a good inexpensive tripod (<100usd). Seems like there is a lot out there and I'm not really sure what I'm looking for/at. many thanks

I bought (several years ago) a Slik Able 300 DX for under $100 Canadian... It is fairly heavy/stable.

i bought one off of ebay for like 30usd and it's been great, i'm planning on upgrading soon but this will do it for now, it's pretty strong, holds 8lbs.
