Tripods and image stabilization

I no the basics of you are supposed to turn image stabilization off while doing long exposures on tripods. So the question is should I leave vr(nikon) is(canon) on if I am using a very terrible tripod or is it still better to turn it off?

If you are holding the lens whilst shooting on a tripod then turn the IS/VR off even if on a cheap tripod as the combined amount of stability will be enough. If, however the tripod is wobbling when you go to leave camera+lens freestanding on the tripod - DON'T. Take the camera off the tripod and get a better tripod because all that is likely to happen is the whole setup goes over and you end up with broken gear.

Thank you that's exactly what I was looking for. The vr is something I often overlook on a tripod. I will be sure to remember that it should be off.

Well, it needs to sense movement in order for VR/IS/OS to even operate. No reason they can't sense lack of movement.

A tripod shouldnt move at all. At very least keep the strap in your hands so if the whole thing goes, you at least keep your camera intact.

Agreed.

No sense risking your gear on a wobbling beat up tri-pod. It's just cheap insurance to buy a new one.

Surely that's a moot point, if the camera is completely stable then the IS wouldn't be doing anything anyway would it?

It would be compensating for movement that isn't occurring.

The older models can possibly react and blur the image.
