Tripods....

what about a boom? Ive always had problems with the center of gravity, and finding a useable counter weight... anyone make one?
 
I would use my camera bag as a counter-weight. You could use sand bags, but they would be a pain in the ass to drag around the woods - great for home or studio though.

If you have nothing to use as a counter-weight, try to pile some stuff on top of the end of one of the legs.
 
Just make sure the head is at the center of gravity.

That would be a big one. Try not to ever get it into a position where a slight bump can cost you big $$$ because it's way out of CG.

I have an Induro AX214...very versatile & well built. Note the hook on the centerpost....when it's in the upright position, it's easy to hang the camera bag (or sandbags) for added stability.

AH HA!!!!! I have one of those booms, and i dont have the hook on the end.. So thats what that threaded hole is for.. A hook for a sand bag!!!!
