Trouble with Scene Modes with Nikon D3100

Hello, this is my first post...
I've been having troubles with the scene modes, I don't know why my Nikon D3100 does not recognize the different scenes, for example, when I place it on "Child" the camera recognize "A" and not "Child" this trouble only happens with Auto Scenes and not Manual Programs, it´s odd, I'm worried, I use my camera mostly on "M" but for casual Photography the Auto Scenes are always a good option.
Any ideas? is there any way to update firmware or something like that?

What do you mean, "A"? Aperture mode?

Yes, all manual programs works just fine but scene modes like sports, portrait, child, don't
