I love the look of a single light, but I would recommend placing a white reflector below his face for a subtle clamshell effect to light up his eyes a little bit more.

I understand where you're going with the reflector but that wasn't the look I was after. I wanted the fade to black. Good info for upcoming shoots.

I think the dark areas of the photo all bleed together and would be fixed by taking a much more subtle approach to applying contrast in post-production.

I'll go back and re-visit this and see what it would look like with less contrast.
