trying my depth abilities

so im trying to get better at depth but all i really know how to do is the manual and auto focus, i dont know much about my camera (cannon rebel T1i) and tips??

Look up stuff about aperture. You look like you've got a relatively decent grasp on it, but it could just be the camera choosing settings for you.

Larger aperture (small number) = more shallow depth of field. Other than aperture, you can also use focal length and relative distance between the subject, background, and camera to manipulate DOF. At least that's what I've read.

F/5 and f/5.6 are not going to get you the DOF you want.
