I think (with the current composition) this could benefit greatly from a more interesting sky. Or, you could crop more closely around the structure.

This is a somewhat classic cropping question: Do I follow the rule of thirds on the horizon? Do i want more foreground? Do I want more sky? Think about what "adds" to the image. I think cwceaser is right in that the sky isn't adding to your photo on this particular day -- not much drama or contrast in the sky. The foreground is more interesting than the sky, but still not the strongest point.

For me, the strongest part of the image is that building. It looks like it probably has lots of interesting detail... but it's too far away to see the detail.

Consider walking a bit closer so that the detail can provide more visual interest.

You took it with the Canon AE-1 (I still have my original AE-1 on the shelf behind me) so you got bonus points for that!

As noted, the sky isn't terribly exciting nor is the foreground. And the white log (I assume it's a log, though it could be a giant piece of PVC) in the foreground is kind of distracting. The building is definitely interesting, though. And I also like the contrast of the single dark shrub to the right. I think zooming in and catching the shrub and the building would give you better composition. Also, the entire photograph overall is a bit white/bright for my tastes, but I think that's more a personal thing than anything else.

Great advice thanks. I always struggled with the skies; Ihave terrible luck with hazy cloudy days when ever I go on a photo trip. I havetried a yellow filter and that helped. I have others of this building andothers in this ghost town. It was a snowing in the distant we couldn’t get backhome that night had to stay in a hotel, woke up to 12 in of snow.
