It sure does, but I've seen this before. The ficus trees come back beautifully the next year. The gardening crew here does a great job, right down to deadheading roses! BTW, this extreme cutting back is sometimes used on young bonsai trees.

We just got back to L.A., and happened to pass the same tree. The amazing thing is I remembered your request! Still not full bloom seven months after the severe pruning, but it's clear they didn't kill it.
