I flew back from Slovenia yesterday. I woke up at 5am (Slovenia time) to have time to eat breakfast and get on a 7:30 shuttle bus to the airport. We left from Venice, so it was a 2-2.5-hour ride to the airport. Flight was at 1:30 or so, and took about 8.5 hours. Dozed for maybe a total of 45 minutes, but was awake otherwise. Arrived in NY at about 4-ish NY time (10-ish Slovenia time). Got picked up at JFK and the drive home took 1.5-2 hours.

Running tally: 17 hours awake, about 12 or so of them in some sort of moving vehicle.

Got home around 7-ish in the evening and managed to stay awake until 9:45, bringing the total up to something like 20-ish hours, then slept the sleep of the dead for 10.5 hours.

Woke up to find this:

Yup, I'm home :) Have no idea what time it is and I have to keep reminding myself what day it is, but I'm home.

I hear ya.

For us it was the going away part, up @ 2am, hour drive via shuttle to Toronto, 3 hours in airport, 6 hour flight to Vancover, two hours in airport 2+ hours flight to Anchorage, hour in airport, 2 hour bus ride to deep water port to board ship & then long line for boarding pass & finally on the ship for first meal. All in all we were up for about 24 hours. The Alaska cruse back to Vancouver was worth it.

The way to Slovenia was a bit worse - I was up for a longer period of time and the ride from Venice to the coastal town we stayed at first took 5 hours (twice the usual time) in bumper-to-bumper traffic on a hot day with no air conditioning, but you're certainly right that the vacation that comes after the travel is usually worth the trouble. :)

I'm not usually a cruise sort of person, but I'd definitely like to take one in Alaska. Sounds like it was a great time!
