Under-18 girls soccer - Gates Tournament, Rochester

I got some shots of our Under-18 girls team in action this past Sunday. Some of them turned out alright. The light seemed nicer in person than it came out in pictures. And I think I have to stop chickening out on shutter speed - I'm still seeing some blur in the hands. Argh.

And unfortunately, as runnah said in another thread, soccer girls suffer from "derp" face an awful lot.

What was your f stop? The backgrounds are really distracting in these.

why not f/5.6 and 1/2000?

the background would be better and you'd stop the action better (there's a bit of motion blur in these)

With all my soccer shots I'm usually at f/2.8 for subject isolation. Mostly gets rid of the distracting backgrounds too.
And allows a fast shutter speed.

at f/4 she'd be at 1/4000 (max speed), although she was shooting at ISO 400, so she did have wiggle room to go to ISO 100 and f/2.8 at 1/4000 if available.

AUTO ISO with a max at something dependent upon the camera (say 800 to feel safe)

So try Aperture priority for a while and see what the shots look like with AUTO ISO with a 800 max.

Gah. I can DO that? (Auto ISO with a max, I mean - for some reason I thought if I put it on Auto ISO it would scream way up, and on a T3 that's not good). Obviously, I should know that and as soon as I get home I'm punching that in.

As for the shutter speed, I have no really good explanation. I think I was just having a daft day. I was in shutter priority and set it at 1/500, put the ISO at 400 because I know it's ok noise at that level. The last couple of times out it was really dull and rainy, so maybe my brain tripped on that? The background IS super distracting, I agree. Next game I'm going to go with your suggestion, thanks!

you dont need to set a max on day like that; just let it wander if it has to in order to get the exposure correct based on your other settings.

if anything on a bright day, and a wide aperture, it's going to generally want to stay low. It would have been nice to use if say you went with ISO 400, 1/2000, and F/5.6 over the settings you did (same exact exposure). This way, if the sun peaks out, you have two stops in ISO it can reduce or if the clouds move over you have room that way as well.

All you gotta do is worry about shooting.
