OK, he's my grandson, and you will not "connect" in the same way. I suppose by posting this I'm saying how the unplanned shots can often deliver much better. I was waiting for the dear boy to face me and give me one of his 100 watt smiles....just as I got him all lined up, he turned away. magic! (at least to me)

Anyone else got any examples?

I'm a grandfather as well and these shots are always keepers.

That being said, your focus is way off here.
You know you would like this to be sharper, yes?

A little fill flash might have helped, but I'm not familiar with your gear so I don't know if that's an option.

Both shots were taken with a Nikon D700 and the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 (old, non-art version) with diffused flash bounced off ceiling.

Edit: The second shot was actually taken using the Nikon 85mm f/1.4 D and not the Sigma.

Hmmm there's something very subtle and feminine about seeing mom (I assume it's mom) without her hair in the frame. Baby's expression is very nice. Excellent!

Edit: whoops was not talking about the OP's photo. Agree re: focus, but expression and moment are expressed nicely I think I like the way the patterns in the wall paper stand against the pattern in the seat

Oh, yes, technically it's not a brilliant image.....not really the point I was making; but thanks for the input. Very much an ad hoc photo, with a camera I've been neglecting (panasonic DMC-G5) in favour of the Nikon. I know it can give good results...next time the daughter in law brings the wee lad over for lunch, I'll run through the camera features first!
