Hello all. I have a canon 50mm f1.8 and i have considered buying the 50mm f1.4 USM for the USM feature and the 1.4 might come in handy. Then i thought about how much i loved using the 50mm on my 30d when i had that. I realized the 50mm was more like a 85mm on the 30d then when this thought popped up i considered getting the 85mm f1.8. What do you guys think? Upgrade or get something differant?

I'd vote for the 85mm and keep the 50mm f/1.8. I too liked the 85mm

Don't forget that another difference between the 50's is the number of aperture blades as well as the aperture and build.

There's almost no difference between 1.4 and 1.8... the usm is nice but not really needed on a 50mm lens.

So go with the 85mm f1.8!

I love both focal lengths on my 5DII. That said, I could not stand the 50 f/1.8 and I think the 1.4 version is definitely worth upgrading to. the 85 practically rules out full body portraiture and you can pretty much rule out environmental portraiture. Two totally different lenses IMHO. I could go with a 50 and an 85 or even a 50 and a 135, but not just the 85 or 135 alone.

If you shoot with the 50 a lot, IMHO its worth the upgrade, then pick up an 85 or 135 down the road. Otherwise, keep the 50 1.8 and get the 85/135 now.
