what do you guys think, is it worth it? FWIW I shoot mostly my family and kids

Well, I didn't have the 70D but I had the 60D and it was a nice surprise to use the 80D. I have a 5D Mk III but I use the 80D as a carry around camera as it is lighter and I like the flip screen. The sensor seems to match my 5D but of course cropped. My primary lens is the Sigma 17-70.

I think its well worth the upgrade.
Unlike the change in Nikon from the D7100 to the D7200 which wasn't a huge upgrade the 80D is a better camera with better AF system and much better sensor.
I think its worth the upgrade, the 70D never had a very impressive sensor for photography while the 80D is a jump in performance in low light and even more in dynamic range, still not matching Sony sensors but its closing the gap fast and is overall an excellent sensor.

What will the 80D do that the 70D doesn't?

Nothing much but it can do same thing better as I said better AF, better low light performance, better DR
Its worth the upgrade in my eyes.

You're asking a rather generalized question and also asking if it's "worth it".

Typically when this sort of question comes up, the counter-question to ask is... what are you doing (or at least trying to do) with your current gear that isn't work out as well you want?

Depending on the challenges you're having with current gear, the answer might be that you need to look at something else... perhaps a different lens, perhaps a flash, perhaps even a different technique. Sometimes it really is the camera body that's holding you back but we couldn't make that conclusion without some specific examples. And sometimes when the body is holding you back, the upgrade might not be just to get "next year's model" ... it might be to upgrade to a different class of camera entirely (e.g. 7D Mk II, for example... or a full-frame body as another example.)

As T Campbell notes, this question comes up often here, and the answer can be complex. Is it worth it? What lenses do you have? Do you use suplementary lighting? Do you shoot in RAW and post-process? How much education and trainign and practice do you have? These are all part of the equation. Some time and effort spent on improving your skill set, or in using new methods, or new software, or a little bit of new all-around stuff, might be better than getting a new camera. For example: some people do not really push their editing very much, if at all, and are unsatisfied with their photos, thining that a different camera will bring better photos, when in reality, perhaps what was needed most was a more-daring post-processing approach, using say, Lightroom, and the dodge and burn tools, and some of the other adjustment brushes or panels. or maybe a more-strict exposure metering routine would be of a lot of help.

For some people who do a lot of family/children stuff, the issue can be bad exposures, and a really GOOD flash unit can help in a lot of indoor scenarios, especailly if you live in a darker climate where for six months of the year, indoors is a VERY dim place! learning say, how to shoot beautifully dbalance bounced flash + ambient light from say the Neil V. books could be a $24 fix instead of a $1199 "fix".

Sometimes its not just about if the upgrade is worth it and its more about I simply WANT to make this upgrade and I am looking for others to agree with me.
I have a sever G.A.S which apparently my doctor said is uncurable, so I am forced to buy cameras every few years and I FRICKN LOVE IT :1219::1219::1219:

No it's not worth it...unless you do a lot of video or have money burning a hole in your pocket.

There are probably many things you and I could do to improve our pictures besides upgrading our cameras. This is coming from someone who just dropped close to $3,000.00 on a new camera and 2 lenses. My pictures are now a little better, I can shoot in lower light where before I used a flash and bounced it of things. I can now enlarge my pictures to 48" x 72" where before I could only enlarge to 36" x 60". (tongue in cheek) 99% of my pictures never get viewed on anything bigger than my 16" laptop. Once in a while I will have a picture of one of my grand kids enlarged to an 8 x 10 and hang it on the wall or give it to somebody. The point I'm trying to make is that your 70D, while not the latest and greatest, is no dog as a picture taking machine and can still serve you very well for sometime to come. One thing I will say that a new camera does is renew ones interest in photography as it has done for me. Just know that even though you may want it, you probably don't really need it. (jmho)

could be but also look at the new Canon M5 mirrorless (smaller and lighter and easier to carry around at family and events)

I don't think it's worth it. I think a much better way to spend that money would be on education. New gear won't help you take better pictures, but taking a workshop hosted by a talented family or portrait photographer will. Creativelive offers a lot of downloadable video workshops as well, and in my experience are worth the relatively low price.
