This was my first time shooting a basketball game. I was using a Nikon D3100, Nikon 70-200 f 2.8 VR I, ISO 3200, shutter speed 1/500 and 1/640The lighting in the arena was crap so I was forced to up my ISO to 3200.Here are some of my pictures of the game

You're still underexposed on most of these and it appears the color balance is somewhat off. Because of the under exposure you really can't see the faces and eyes. It's always better to blow out the whites a bit to get the other details. You still have room to get better exposures on these.

crap lighting for basketball is shooting in a highschool gym at ISO 6400 f2.8 @ 1/320.... You have great lighting in this place.

I realize the fact that I am underexposed for some of these photos and that the white balance is off. But when I go to up the exposure in post processing its going to up the amount of noise in the photo and I don't want to do that. I also adjusted the white balance until I felt comfortable with the end result.

Up your exposure when taking the picture, it's better to have a well exposed image with some noise in it than one that's underexposed and loses important details like faces. You have plenty of light to do it in camera when you shoot the games. Take your ISO up to 6400, slightly over expose the shots and then bring it back down a bit in post processing which should help get rid of some of the noise in darker areas.

What lens are you using? For f2.8 there seems to be way too much background in focus with the action.

Apart from the images being a little loose, the action is there. Yes they are a little dark, so what, the timing was there. I think you did a pretty good job on these.
