Using a smaller ND filter on a bigger lens

Can anyone tell me how to use a 52mm ND filter on a 58mm lens and what are the disadvantages?

The photos will be heavily vignetted because the step ring will block part of the front lens element. Inexpensive, low quality filters will usually soften focus, promote unwanted lens flare, and possibly cause other image quality issues.

If I had a bigger filter on a smaller lens, would I still have vignetting problems?

I just got a B&W nd filter, by the way. I hope it won't get too much lens flare...

A bigger filter on a smaller lens won't be a problem. Rule of thumb is to buy GOOD filters (B+W is very good) for the size of your largest lens, and then step-down rings to fit all the others.

I think you mean step-up filters rings.
