UV Filters as protection...Does quality really matter?

apparently you missed the part where I really give a chit. however, I did see smudges where the person was wiping away with their finger.. however the video did not go into detail wether those were perm scratches, marks on the glass that could or could not be wiped away, or anything but a hammer hitting glass and it not breaking. I only commented to it as I thought it was a bit comical. I doubt highly that anyone would compare the claw end of a hammer's destructive force to a shards of glass's destructive force...as a shard of glass would ultimately give away as it too would break or crumble...and and the claw end of a hammer would not.

Not that it will likely make any difference to you since you seem to already have your mind made up, regardless of anything anyone in this thread has to say or show you or cite to the contrary, but we actually had someone on this forum not long ago post an example where a shattered filter scratched their front element in the process of breaking.

I'm not saying it can't happen, and sorry if it appears as such...I just find some arguments interesting and at times comical. I think I have already stated that I don't use them as I use a hood and care for my lenses to where I feel I don't need that protection.

I agree that for every example either one way or another, a person can find a hundred examples to contradict it. You yourself even posted to where a filter "saved" your lens. So it sort of solidifies my point I was making that a person should not state that it can't or is useless...which was done here in this thread by others, when you yourself proved it was not useless. Again...only in terms of "protection".

Slight correction actually: At the time that it happened, I thought that the filter probably saved my front element, but that's because I was already predisposed to want to believe that.

Now that I've actually done the research on this over the years since that happened, I no longer believe that it did anything except shatter a thin, easily shattered filter that in point of fact served no real purpose, warped its threads onto my lens so that it was nearly impossible to remove, and caused a bigger pain than necessary in my having to seek out help to remove it.

I see no actual evidence that it actually protected anything at all, which is why I will never use them or recommend their use again.

So in order to be a part of the general consensus and be accepted among the masses, you decide not to believe that back when your filter had helped in preventing your lens from damage, you were actually in fact delusional because of your predisposition to believe in it, and only now you in fact see the error of your ways, as the lens would have been fine anyway had you not had the filter on it.

*shrugs* oh well. I don't use a filter, and I don't care for this threads direction anymore. The op got his answer and I helped him with is ND filter question...so..enjoy your thread folks.

you totally answered with a snide smart ass remark as to my ability to assess the goings on in a video. I have seen nothing but overrated opinions and E peens, and attitudes along the lines of "if you don't think like me or listen to my words you are not worthy" and its sad. This place is better than that. That mixed with backwards and forwards information, information presented as "fact" when it is clearly opinion....it's ridiculous. There really seems to be no middleground with many of the folks here and that too is sad...but hey...w/e

I'm not an advocate for uv filter, as stated many many many times, i dont use them, don't care...my comments are mostly about the way information is being passed along. So like I said a moment ago, I'm done and off to the galleries...enjoy.
