Versa vs. fixed apex tripod

I'm thinking of buying a RRS tripod but am confused.

RRS has two different versions of each tripod....a fixed apex vs. versa apex version.
I never shoot panoramas nor do I shoot video. So is the fixed apex version for me?

seems by design the versa would be more stable -- but that tacks on a lot of money just to have a threaded hole on the base...

The verse is a larger base, the apex folds to a smaller diameter.
