Very New to Photography, C&C Needed

Well I just recieved my new Nikon D40 about 3 hours ago. So needless to say I have been taking alot of pictures. Lol but sadly this is the only one I feel resembles anything close to a 'good' photograph. So please tell me what can I do to imporve this?

P.S. Bare with me here, this is one of the tables in my house. I would go out but it is a bit snowy and chilly here in Wausau, WI.

Not bad, crop out a bit of the top/back to get the snowman uncentered and I think it will be alot stronger. Good start, I just got my first camera a month ago and I'm loving it so far =].

i like the glow from the lamp, but it seems a tad bit out of focus to me (could be me though, i need to get my prescription checked) also, i wonder if adjusting the snow man so he was facing the camera would be better, or a different camera angle? what settings did you use for this shot? great job though for only having the camera a short amount of time. i also have the d40. happy clicking
