Vignetting

What is it ?

I have seen it referred to here and there, and have worked out it is some sort of effect or distortion of an image due to some factor regarding the lens .... But that really doesn't mean much does it .... So a simple explanation would be good and helpful too

oh and chromatic aberration is another one .... Is this a colour distortion perhaps ?
