vivitar 70-210 series 1 macro lens question

i shoot with an fm2 (with the split image and focusing prism) and i recently acquired this beauty off of craigslist and it was definately a steal...no fungus, clean glass, a hood, uv filter, little zoom creep but not a big deal...

while playing with the macro, i noticed that while at 70mm end, it seemed to focus around 2-3 inches (5-8cm). the prism looked crisp and the split image was matched up. does this extreme closeness strike any of you as strange?

my eyes say no but my brain says yes :mrgreen:

anyone with experience with this lens or similar macro lenses...i havent been able to find much about it so input would be appreciated

because i keep thinking back to those boring packets from photography class that say that the longer the lens, the further away the subject HAS to be, and the math of it all doesnt make sense in my head
