VSCO Cam - Tell me everything you know!

VSCO cam presets seem to be the hot thing so I've gotta ask, who here uses them?
I never have but my buddy insisted it was worth the money and that I should at least give it a try. Where do I even begin? Is it worth it?

For those using VSCO presets:

How do you choose which preset? I was exploring on my buddy's computer and it seemed like there were just so many options.
Do you simply use it as a starting point or is it one click and you're done?

I do. I use Kodak Portra 160 VC 2 for colored work and Kodak TRI-X 400 UC 2 for B/W.

I generally use the ones that don't have too much color shifts or fades.

I'm particularly a fan of Fuji Provia.

I don't just use the preset and then leave it though. I think the presets should complement the editing instead of the editing relying on the preset

They're canned effects. The instant they become known they become stale and overused.

Open a can of green beans. Put it in the refrigerator.

Wait two weeks.

Buy some fresh green beans or better yet pick some from your garden and cook them. Then get the canned beans from the refrigerator and heat them up.

Which ones are you going to eat?

I agree to an extent, but editing isn't usually what makes photos original in the first place. Heh. You can have an original photo that has a similar aesthetic to that of another's photo.

There is something wrong if the originality of your images rely on editing.

I use VSCO cam..... on my iphone.

It does the cleanest B&W conversion and then I bump contrast.

I do this for pictures I post to instagram.

Apparently they make a computer software that I knew nothing about, which is what you guys are talking about.
