Wakeboard!

First time photographing sports, but some friends forced me to take pictures of them and I did C&C? how could I improve?

The action ones I'm not too happy about, I couldn't get one where they weren't blocking their face, or the sun wasn't creating shades all over the place, or hte background wasn't busy...

with the 18-55 it would have been tough... but you could have opened it all the way up to try and get a little more seperation from the background. the sun is also coming from an awkward angle. but it looks nice and glassy out there... and the time of day would have produced some decent shots if you were not getting the dark side. when i shot some wake boarding a few months ago i went through almost 700 pics for just a few that were usable. also, maybe you couldnt do anything about it, but shooting from another boat riding along side the rider, could also produce some different angles. almost all wakeboard shots from the under the tower look like this....

I didn't want to open all the way because I was scared of losing focus, since it was my first time photographing moving objects, but I'll definitely try and do that next time, now that I've gotten sort of used to focusing them as they go. We had another boat that day, but I didn't even think about it, so that's another thing to try next time!

A speedlight would have made a huge difference for this setting as well. You could have filled in the shadow side of the rider and got a nice sharp image. The light coming in is gorgeous. I lose interest quickly because I can see no emotion on the rider's face.

I'm also thinking fill flash. Those are tough conditions: glare, water, sky, constantly-changing angles and perspectives, need for high shutter speed and smaller aperture. It gives me even more respect for sports photographers.

Maybe try a rear curtain sync?

Well, I don't have any other equipment, only the on camera flash, and they were way too far away for it to be effective....I guess next time I'm just gonna have to ask the guys to look towards the sun, so I can try and get a clear shot of their faces...either that or play with silhouettes, whih they are not gonna be happy about, but they spent the whole day saying it was the camera tking the pictures and not me, SO TOO BAD
