I like these photos. I don't get to see "city life" all that much... I like the B/W photos not to crazy bout the one thats in color, but that is my personal opinion..

Thanks Eva... I had the last one in B&W and returned it to color. I just really liked the vibrant yellows.

There's a lot going on in 1, 2 and 4, but I think you need to decide what you're trying to show. For example, in 1, the figures in the distance may be interesting, but they're too small to see well, the puddle might give you some interesting reflections if you moved around it, and other things in the street also might be worth a closer look. As it is, though, I'm not getting anything in particular from it. Just my two cents - a lot of people don't get my pictures, so perhaps these don't work for me, but do for others.

Ditto.
KenC is right
I am not nearly as inclined to temper my words as KenC so, if your feelings are sensitive, stop reading here.

I have no idea what you want the viewer to look at.
What is important in the first two? What do you expect the viewer to see or experience? Why isn't it big, well-framed, well-lit?
#3 is an attempt to make some object more important by darkening the area around it. Stop. Vignettes should not be obvious and they are meant only to keep the eye from wandering off, not as a design element.
As it is, this is a picture of a sign in the middle of a smoky fire.

#4. Ok, you like the color contrast.

Why isn't the picture framed something like this below?
Framing a picture means to get the important things to prominent places in the frame and eliminating the rest as much as possible.

Hi fellow Hoosier, I can hardly believe it's taken me this long to come across one of your threads although after perusing your threads I admittedly spend little time in the nature section. I live in New Albany and grew up in Corydon so we definitely have similar stomping grounds. I've taken similar shots to three of these so I'll offer up what I think. I'm no expert so take what I say with a grain of salt.

1. I took nearly the exact same image last year during Harvest Homecoming at night. I think we must have been thinking the same thing when I shot it, that it looked like a good place to capture but what we both ended up with was just an alley that doesn't tell much of a story. It looks nice there just isn't much to it.

2. I've tried three different times to shoot that diner. Twice at night and once during the day and have never been happy with any of them. I actually like this one more than what I've done. My main goal was to show just how small it is but for whatever reason scale seems to be lost. I'm thinking you shot this one from the corner by the Cuban restaurant next to the Grand. I'm going to redo my first shot but during the day this time from the farmer's market corner and see if I like it better. I like that you have the people outside chatting and I think if you were on that corner you would have showed a little more of their faces and maybe a little more of a story.

3. I'm trying to figure out where this one is. It looks familiar but I can't seem to place it. I'm wondering what it would have looked like in color as I'm guessing the colors of the sign have probably naturally washed out and faded.

4. A bit busy. From where you are I would have made the shot more about the girl. I do love that Firsestone building though. I wish I could catch an evening when he didn't have cars parked out front like that all the time. I think he does that on purpose to keep people out of his parking lot, especially since Wick's opened up next door.

Any plans on shooting Thunder tonight? I had originally planned on it but with the all the flooding I think I'm going to pass. I'm going to have my camera ready this afternoon though as I can usually catch a glimpse of some planes during the air show from my house but I'm not going to make any more effort than that.

Not at all Ken, I'm just glad someone took the time to point out errors and lack of composition. Thanks for your time.

Nice to meet you fellow Hoosier! I grew up in Crandall. The Sunoco sign was on my way home at an abandoned gas station in Elizabeth. I usually just photograph in my area (which is country obviously) but thought I'd try the city for a change. I hope to do more city life for my 'one-a-day' image project.

I raised a handicap daughter for 13 years so getting to Thunder was never an option. She died in 2004 but I still hadn't gone. Last year a friend invited me to their Galt House suite and I had an absolute blast!

Yesterday the planes were doing practice runs so I went down to the waterfront but the cloud cover made for horrible photos. Well that, and I don't know what I'm doing being the biggest flaw. ;)

Nice to meet you!

Maybe I'm a bit different and I know it's been said but I do tend to fill the frame with my subject and I would like to have seen a better crop on #4. You can at least fix that last one with a little PP. They had an airshow come to the county airport near my house and I got the chance to take that shot (F22 and Mustang) but my wife had the camera and she didn't zoom so it was 2 dots in the sky. Needless to say the wife has her own camera now. Anyway, keep shooting.
