I set up my tripod had him lay on the bed first, took some test shots to make sure the exposure was right, focused on his feet, set the timer and got into position.

Something makes me think that this picture has more of a personal value and who said she was looking for a shot with perfect feet? Its a shot with THEIR feet.
You need to think outside of that box that you are obviously completely stuck in.
