I just received my extension tubes, so I thought I would try them out on some coins. I am using my tripod and my remote shutter release. Everything looks perfectly in focus through the viewfinder, but when I view the final picture it looks OOF. Is it the lighting? Could it be shutter movement? Could it be with this particular coin the light is creating shadows which makes it looks OOF to me?

Help me out here.

r u manually focussing or auto and r u using a remote release?

Could it be that the lens is just that soft when the extension tubes are added?

I think "haven't got" should actually be "do not have". But trust me, I get you man, I really do! :lmao:

I checked it out and I think you're OK! It just sounded off to me.

Can we get this thread back on topic please? Is there anyone that knows what's wrong?

I think Destin might be right. I used some Hoya magnifying filters before and never cared for the results due to sharpness issues.
I've the got the sharpness I want/need through the viewfinder though. It's only after I take the picture that it looks like that.

well id personally use auto and do it near diffused window light, it looks a bit underexposed to me. are you shooting in raw

This may sound odd, but try a different shutter speed... longer or shorter.

I noticed years ago that this could happen when I was shooting around 1/15 sec.
It SEEMS it's camera shake. Shooting at 1 sec did better.

I can only guess it was because the mirror was moving for a smaller % of the total exposure.

I dunno. Maybe it's all in my head. But try it and let me.

extensions tubes can cause that if they are cheap glass.

As far as I know extension tubes don't have glass. They just extend the lens away from the body.

If possible use mirror lock-up and 10x cropped live view with manual focus to get it as sharp as you can. Plus of course a remote trigger or timer.
