Agree about the 18-70. Although quite a big lens in some social settings.

On a DX, I'd just use the 35mm. It's not wide, but you'll find plenty of pictures to frame with it. It will get you contextual pictures in and around architecture, street scenes but not always the whole frontage of a building etc. Landscapes tend to fit any lens, depending on how you can visualise and shoot. The 35mm is compact, which counts for a lot as a traveller, tourist.
 
When I fly, I take the body and a small short light lens and buy a larger one at the location. Then before heading back home, I either give it to the person I am visiting as a gift or donate it to a local children's charity.
It's the best of both worlds. Of course when driving, I take a lot more gear.
