What's doing in the chain picture? The top link are sitting funny to me. What is the actual item?

the chain links are sitting on one a pedal and two a sprocket... this is kind of a product shot(not really tho) and the chain wrapped around gives it a nice composition(atleast ive been told by micheal ramey(if you do the research is a good pro photographer in seattle))--which is also my instructor too..
