For anyone truely interested in visual image composition, studying why those photographs are considered top shelf work even though the photographers bent/distorted/broke some of the accepted guidelines would be educational.

It goes to the notion that you cannot effectively step outside the bounds of the established guidelines without a pretty good reason.
