A really crummy, cheapie polarizing filter can destroy lens quality faster than almost anything. I picked up a really cheap polarizer one time at my favorite local pawnshop, and put it on my 80-400 VR lens near the beach, set the camera up on the tripod, and looked through the viewfinder...everything looked wonky....still, I shot a few frames, and they were UTTER GARBAGE....I mean utter, total, flush-it-down-the-cra**er bad! When I got home I examined the images closely. Wow...it is difficult to describe how BADLY that polarizing filter impacted the images made at any focal length. I took the thing back for a refund. It was low cost, but the thing was just simply horrible. Horrible!
As far as getting airborne food detrius on a lens front...unless one is deep frying chicken or oysters or French fries, airborne grease is not too common.
