I am new to photography but loved the effect of this photo - with the wide curving beach and would love to know what lens or technique was used?

There is no photo, but with you mentioning wide curving beach, I'd guess either a wide angle lens or even a fisheye.

Um, ANYWAY, you mentioned a wide, curving beach. I would guess that it was a fisheye. Do you have a link to the photo you're talking about?
