Not a problem. Do be careful on the length if you cut your own temp hood. If the lens is wide or the hood to long you will start to see it in the photo. Depending on what you are shooting, a little vignette is no problem if you intend to crop. Sometimes it is worth it to keep the flare down.

Another thing to think about with IR is keeping the lens and camera cool. Hot objects can give off IR. So if you leave the lens sitting out in the sun too long it can possible cause glow in a long exposure.

I try never to leave the gear in a hot car or out in the sun for too long.
 
just a tip, i've heard from quite a few people on another forum that the sigma 10-20 has some hotspots as well, im not sure about the canon though

any lens thats very comlex element/grouping wise, is going to be prone to lens flare, primes are almost always a safe bet that they'll be IR glare free
 
Someone suggested the 50mm f/1.8 for IR photography, but I have had occasional hot spots with it. It all depends on how you position the lens in relation to the sun.
