What two would you choose?

Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8D ED Lens: $780
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Autofocus Lens: $1500
Would love to spend as least as possible but not at the expensive of major quality.

Well a couple of things to consider - the Nikkors will hold their resell value better than the Tamron's. For the 70-200 mm I guess my question would be, what is it you plan on shooting with it? If your going to be shooting sports/fast action then I'd probably lean toward the Tamron, it has a built in AF motor and will focus faster. If your shooting portraits/events I'd probably lean toward the Nikon, less expensive and if you have the time to let it focus maybe a better investment over the long haul.

On the other one I'd probably wouldn't go with either to be honest. I'd look at a Tamron 17-50 2.8 instead, unless you really really think your going to need those focal lengths between 50 and 70, and even then I'd probably look at getting maybe a 60 mm nikkor prime and a 17-50 2.8 instead of the 24-70 zoom.

I go with both the Nikons you've listed; as mentioned, they will hold their resale value much better than the 3rd party. For example: About 8 years ago, I bought a Nikkor 60mm f2.8D Micro for $350 (used). Two years ago, I sold it for $325.

This is the ultimate question. It's hard to say which lenses we would pick without knowing what you plan on doing with them.

Thanks I'd be shooting some events, portraits, a lot of wiggly kids(weddings, celebrations etc) not sports but I do sometimes have a tendency to have hand shake. Do you think the Nikon would suffice still?

tirediron...not so much worried about resale right now -maybe foolish but mostly just want to be sure I nail shot when I have to which is sometimes quickly. (not fast car quick...lol, but squirmy kids or special moments at a wedding or ceremony)
