So I'm picking up my first expensive lens on Monday.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/tech-data/B0026FCKC8

Buying it used off craigslist (a year old, owner said he's only used it a few times. We'll see I guess. Bringing my camera and computer and going to check the pictures on my actual computer before I hand over the cash.

This wil be my fourth lens, 1) kit 18-55mm lens 2) 55-200 telephoto 3) 35mm prime. All of those were relatively inexpensive (sub $200).

Got me curious what was the first lens that you guys bought that cost more than say an average consumer grade DSLR? (kind of my line for expensive, costs more than my camera).

I know a lot of you guys will say '$1000 lens and you're buying it used lol, you haven't seen expensive yet.' :lmao:

My first expensive lens was my 80-200 f/2.8. That 10-24 looks pretty tasty :D

Nice. yeah, my two favorite types of photography are landscape and architectural, so if I'm going to drop a lot on a good lens, it was going to be a wide angle. Then I found one at a great price on CL, so much so that i could probably flip it for a profit if I didn't want it. Too bad for my wallet that I'm really excited about it, haha.

I was actually looking to get that lens, but that won't happen until I a)finish paying off the 80-200 (lol) and b)find it for a good price

I have the 10-24.. and love it! Really is a nice lens. I am considering selling mine though, since I want to get the 14-24 Nikkor.

The most expensive lens I bought was a Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5, for something like $350. It's not exactly the greatest lens in the world. Not all that sharp. I will probably be getting a wide angle L zoom lens next year.

I kind of have joint first expensive lenses since I got my 70-200mm f2.8 IS L original and Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro at the same time :) Twas a great and amazing day trying out those two lenses (plus really scary as they both had massive front elements!)

The f 2.8 constant aperture? That thing looks awesome, but I really wanted those last 4mm. At least that was the way I convinced myself to not drop 2K on that bad boy. haha.

Just out of intrigue... what made you choose the more pricey 10-24 over third party choices? The Sigma 10-20 and Tokina 11-16 seemed to be rated just as highly. I still wonder sometimes if I'd prefer the Nikon over my siggy.

I'm getting an awesome deal on it used. Plus it retains resale value a little better. From what I've heard from reviews the Nikkor is a little straighter at the edges and a little sharper. I was all set to get the Tokina, then I just happened to catch this deal.

My first expensive lens was the Nikkor 24-70mm 2.8. I figured if I'm going big I might as well get the other two to complete the trinity...and I did. Best decision I made. I don't have a need to purchase any more glass.

Mine was the original 200 2.8L about 16 years ago! still produced some of the sharpest images i've ever seen :) If I recall I paid around £320 / $500
