The lack of sharpness was intended. I did debate one whether to crop it more, but I like the way the the natural vignette worked out.

I'm not talking sharpness. I'm talking contrast. If it was intended I think it was way over done.

Gotcha. The way I shot this was in an all or nothing kind of way. I'm trying to figure out a way to rig my lens to make it work better.

I agree that the lack of contrast prevents the image from having much visual appeal. Soft focus is fine and I don't have a problem with that but this looks like an accident rather than an intended result. Sorry. sometimes our ideas work and sometimes they don't. Ask yourself this: " If I saw this picture in a magazine would I spend more than 2 seconds looking at it. ? " I doubt that you would. The lack of contrast robs it of any visual pop. keep trying and experimenting though. You never know when the magic will happen

Here's a second edit with contrast boosted way up. Any better?

And one other from the same day/technique. I like this one, but wish the OOF part (forgive me, I'm no flower expert) was a bit more in focus.

That does not make any sense, care to explain.
It doesn't make sense because I didn't explain what I did. Not meaning to sound like a pretentious ass, but I've had success with other subjects using the same workflow and I'd rather not explain it.

Tuffy- I gotcha. This was not the best of the set. I liked something about it, I'll just have to reshoot.

Still way to muddy. I just don't understand why you would want it to look like that. What does the original unedited image look like.

And les the second could use more depth of field.
