This is because young people are so insecure as a result of poor self image, which stems media exposure. Ironically enough, young people owe a lot of the reason behind their shotty self esteem to photographers. Photoshop is the kryptonite of the young and insecure.

You know, Photoshop is just a digital darkroom. Photographs used by the media have been altered to make the people in them look spectacular for about 100 years now. Before Photoshop they just did it in a wet darkroom.

Back on topic. The first image is from Febuary, 1961. The second is from Febuary last year. The first, being produced before digital photography was invented, is obviously shot with film. The second photo is obviously digital, and there were probably more hours of Photoshop put into this shot than into the creation of the model's fake breasts.

But what I want everyone to get from this is that you can see how the idea of a "perfect body" and a "perfect shot" has evolved over time. In the first image, it's not a big deal that the subject's face looks oddly contorted, or that her hair is messy. But in the second shot, everything is perfect. Absolutely perfect. If you can find a flaw in that image, post it up.

The rolemodels of soceity, sports players, models, what have you, are perfect. Their beauty is often more than what is physically possible, and is a result of advancements in image manipulation that has only been around the last couple of decades or so.

You know, I am befuddled by the piece on two levels.

First, is when did positive feedback become an addiction?

Second, is so many students are in concentrated (expensive and stressful too) efforts to gain an education and maybe, finally, the light bulb has gone off and the student body is actually focused on succcesful efforts to achieve while there that they are anxious to learn from their instructors that they are on the right track and meeting the target.

My second (of two) just finished this fall after 5.5 years and a lot of interactive and postive feedback.

Self-Esteem Issues? Maybe not. Maybe its Self-Satisfaction from a directed focus that comes from the inner self and not from recreational sex and drugs and parties. While in college, every night is a school night. :wink:

Yes, people of TPF, yes they are. It is truly a pandemic in the sense that we are so used to these perfect forms that if we are given anything else, an outroar is caused.

Oh boy, look at that pretty face. Serena Williams was placed on the front cover of this September 1999 issue of S.I. I don't know if anyone here remembers the day after the issue came out. As a result of the contorted face, readers got their panties in a bunch and started writing about the cover and complaining to the editors.

Another thing that has happened a lot in the last century is that as time progresses, each new generation of humans becomes "weaker," for lack of a better word. At the beginning of the 20th century, as soon as a child got old enough to be of any use (usually age 5+) they were thrown in a factory to make some money for their poor immigrant family. Their small size made it so they were able to crawl under and around machinery, the same machinery that was running while the children were crawling about it. The machine could catch a piece of clothing or a child's limb, pulling the child into the machine and dismembering it. Yet the work was done all for probably about a nickel a day

Nowadays, some parents are just trying to get their kids to move out of their house at age 26. Our kids aren't as tough and resilient to the evils of the world as they once were. Now they're more susceptible to any influence, including the media, than ever.

That's exactly my point. Models aren't getting any better looking, as 50 years certainly isn't enough time for our appearances to evolve to a point to where they would be any different. However, the effect of better photography and new post production software is making a false "perfect image" of a human being.
