Sorry...I'm trying to channel my inner @jcdeboever with these, especially since they both use the lens that he sent me. But I'm just not as good at innuendo as he is, soooo anyways.

Same flower. Two different takes.

Love it my brother from another mother. Awesome. They are hard to get the middle sexual parts sharp. The camera is stupid. You have to out smart it, tell it what to focus on. Try manual focus, spot meter, and rock like a drunken sailor.

I much prefer the focus and the image of #1 over the floating flower. These are nice, but the images needs something else ... maybe some wine?

Thanks, JC! I did use manual focus. I honestly didn't really meter...I adjusted the flash to get the exposure I wanted. I used my 32" softbox to light these. The camera was on a tripod. I used a coffee table as the set. The height made it really difficult to use the viewfinder, so I ended up using live view to focus. Not a lot of DOF with these, even at F14 and F16 respectively. I think that's the downside of the 200mm focal length, but it might inspire me to look at one of the 90mm macro lenses.

Or just more drama. I need to do some reading!

Might investigate focus stacking for such close-in close-ups with such large items, since that could create deeper depth of field for you, and give the flower more presence. It's tough: older era photos often had limited DOF, but since focus stacking has become more common, I think people have come to expect deep depth of field even in flower close-ups. Sort of changing tastes, due to new technologies and new ways of working.

I'm not quite sure if it would work but back lighting in #1 to get a "blackline" image of the vase would eliminate the reflections on the glass and add to the translucent properties of the flower petals. Then use reflectors or balanced light to fill in the shadows from the front??
