It used to be a problem with ejections where pilots arms would get broken because they were flailing about and, more seriously, the pilots legs would still be extended under the "dashboard" upon ejecting, resulting in serious leg injuries and amputations!

Newer seats had straps (like pre-tensioned seatbelts) that clipped onto the pilots calfs and elbows on the flight suits. Part of the ejection sequence involved the straps being pulled tight before the seat left the plane which saved many injuries!
