I have been practicing taking pictures manually and feel confident enough that I would like to start trying to shoot family/friends for experience. A lot of them will be children but there may be the occasional couple or family in there. Where is a good place to get pose ideas? I guess that sounds a little weird that poses is a concern but I will have to learn to direct people (I'm not good at that at all) so I would just like to have some ideas before I start. Any ideas?

I use deviantart for inspiration. Find good portrait photographers, check out their galleries, subscribe to see the new photos once they are published. It really helps.

Thanks for the ideas. I will definitely check them out. Drake, I had forgot about Deviantart. I bet that really would be a great resource!

Pretty much every possible worthwhile pose has been done, over-and-over-and-over.

But there are some good posing systems, like the one that considers the human body as 3 segments so poses can be quantified.

For example the 1-3-2 pose for females or the 1-2-2 pose, used for both males and females.

Plus there are posing considerations like the female head tilt and a male head tilt.

There are a number of good books about posing;
