Hello,

I am a beginner and would like to have some help to start with the right camera gear. Most of the time i will be shooting indoor parties(nightclubs),weddings, photoshoots(potraits) and landscape. A lens to shoot great video too will be nice.

Im am thinking to buy a

Nikon d7000(body)
Nikkon 18-55 vr
Nikkon 70 -300vr
50 1.8
sb 700
and buy the sigma 17-50 2.8 later

The second choice is to start with :
Nikkon d7000(body)
Sigma 17-50 2.8
50 1.8
sb700

and buy the 70-300 vr later

Which option will cover my needs the best to begin with, other suggestions are even welcome.

Thanks Darrel

i dont know about the video part, but as a beginner, are you already booked for parties, weddings, and portraits? or you hope to be doing that. if i may suggest something, if your pretty set on a d7000(which theres absolutely nothing wrong with) then perhaps i would start with the body+kit lens, and get to know your camera first, along with posting what you feel is your best work maybe on this forum to get the full value of the experience some of these forum members have to offer. based on what you've stated, i would think the best place to start would be honing in on your composition skills and whatnot. the gear is trivial in the beginning stages of anything. just my own 2cents.

Second Choice, hands down. The Sigma trumps the 18-55 kit lens, save the money from the 70-300 for a 70-200/2.8 or some superfast zoom that you'll eventually want. You'll probably realize the limiting factors of a 70-300's slow, varying apertures if you shoot with the 18-50/2.8 and 50/1.8... plus, a 70-300 doesn't really fit the type of things you wish to shoot. It's a slow varying aperture zoom... which has no place in a nightclub or a chapel...

I agree with Patrick, There is no need for the 18-55 and the 17-50. I don't know about the Sigma, but I have the Tamron 17-50 2.8 and I think it rocks. I also have a 55-300 and while it's an ok lens, in retrospect I wish I had saved up for a faster 70-200mm.

I sense troll newbie post, maybe it's just me.

I dd too, especially with the user name, but hey, what if there's a guy named Darrel out there who needs help?

He didn't say he was actually booked to do any of those things professionaly, I just assumed he meant that was the direction he intended to take with his photography.

He still made it sound like he was ready to go out tomorrow and shoot the club as a gig. Troll-ish fo sho...

Thank you guys

Actually i am starting a entertainment website the plan is to cover a lot of parties to generate traffic on the site. I am living in Curacao and on this island its a trend to make "party" pictures and photoshoots. I will earn money due advertisment on the website so thats is why i would like to begin with a kit that could cover me the best on a low budget.

Id never mension that i was already booked i just have the intend to shoot in that direction.

Darrel, it is not you nor what you said, it is your username that make people think that way. :)

By the way, welcome to the forum. :D

There is a professional photographer that frequently visits TPF, whose name is Derrel.

D, I like your idea of D7000 body and a 17-50 f/2.8 lens. I would try that out and maybe you will not need the 50mm prime. You could put that money toward a fast tele like the 70-200 f/2.8
