Last summer I bought a rebel XS with the standard EF-S 18-55 lens. I love this camera and use her quite a bit....i drive long haul truck and come across some fantastic veiws, I need to advance to a new telo photo lense to grab some of these veiws....I amj not looking to break the bank, I go on ebay quite a bit and there are tons of lens, but i have no clue which way to go....any suggestions from members would be truely appreciated, and not only telo photo, I would like to add to my kit any type of lens to carry with me.......

I have the same camera and lens, and have been doing a ton of research. From what I can tell, all though it is on the opposite end of the spectrum as a telephoto, the canon 50mm f/1.8 ($120) or the 50mm f/1.4 ($350) are great lenses for 'closer' subjects. They allow for a great boka (blurring of the background to bring focus to the target) and do very well in low-light shooting due to the much larger aperture (opening that lets light into the sensor when the shutter opens).

It maybe better if you specify a budget. "not looking to break the bank" varies from people to people.

On the cheap side but with decent quality you may find Canon 55-250IS. It is aimed at complementing what you already have.

This question is tough without actual budget numbers...

Its probably safe to assume that, based on the entry level DSLR, we're talking a few hundred-ish.

Yeh.. that much I assumed... but is it 300 or 500? If that's all you want to spend there's a big difference between the 2, and also different recommendations..

Good point. I know where I am, with the same camera and lens, I'm looking at the cheapest canon has to offer right now, and can't really climb above that yet. Though, I haven't looked at any sigma, or anything other than canon really.

For a do it all lens I would strongly suggest the 18-200. The lens coves a great range, however its not a master of any specific type of photography. 18-200 is the Jack of all trader master of none.

With enough light I get great results indoors(I use a flash) and outdoors again if the sun is in my favor; on cloudy days, it can be a little more difficult to get great shots at the telephoto end of the lens.

Guess breakin the bank is not the rite way to explain,I am sorry, I was hoping to use Ebay, I live in |Canada and we are taxed to the hill, a Canon ef-18-200 IS non usm runs around 840 dollars after taxes.....I was hoping to stay a few hundred less finding something on ebay used but in good condition, if I can not find anything used than I will have to go new, but for that price it will take a bit of time to put the cash together..but I guess putting a number on a dollar sign I am hoping to pay would be somewhere between 200 and 400 dollars. I drive truck through Canada and the US...my photo targets would be landscapes down in the southern US to bears and moose here in Canada.....I see many lens on ebay in this price range but mostly all are non IS.....not sure if I could chance going non stabilized or that I would be wasting my money not going stabilized....thanks to all who replyed

I was hoping to stay a few hundred less finding something on ebay used but in good condition,

what I suggested (55-250IS) is close to the cheapest solution and stabilized too - Canon 70-300 is cheaper but worst. However, if you shoot landscapes, a tele is not the best lens.

Generally speaking: an inexpensive, older, second-hand one that mounts your camera. If it's your first then almost any will be worth trying, for better or worse. Search ebay for your camera's mount and add a few Buy Nows to your watchlist. Google them to find user opinions.
