Yes when restricted to a short focal length it can be annoying. But some only shoot wide and love it.

For two years I was shooting with a 28mm and a 50mm prime only .. on 35mm film ... and it appeared only too limited with respect to wildlife photography.
 
i was trying to keep it as simple as possible for Andy, thats why i put in the terms i did.

Alex, i agree with your last comment completely.

shooting portraits, pets and some Landscapes is one thing... and possibly one lens

however, i am seeing the limitations of my lens when i try wildlife :( i have a VR ED 70-300mm on order, as ive been borrowing my friends to shoot birds etc.... great lens :)

the 2x tele convertor works fantastic during the day... but makes the images very dark at night.
 
Images are dark because you are losing 2 stops of light with a 2x converter. You really need bright light to use a converter.
