Do you think that tripod would be adequate support for something like a heavy RB67 Med format ?

Pretty sure that is the one I got my girlfriend.... it handles her D7000 and a 28-300 just fine. But I wouldn't throw much else at it....

Even loaded up he has less than 6 pounds - F90 & the 135mm donated by Pixmedic, and occasionally he'll borrow my SB600. His digital rig is a D40 and the 18-135 kit lens. If it will get him through the next few years, we'll be happy.

No, but I'm sure it will handle the OP's D5100 & 18-55 kit lens. He can always upgrade once the money is rolling in.

No, but I'm sure it will handle the OP's D5100 & 18-55 kit lens. He can always upgrade once the money is rolling in.

If you're really on a budget and want a good, cheap tripod that will last a long time, buy a used Tiltall via eBay or a similar source. Get one of the US-made Marchioni Bros. or slightly later Leitz, NJ ones--later production, especially the current Taiwan-made Tiltalls, is not as good. It should cost under $100; perhaps half that. I have several tripods; IMO my Tiltall, which was BY FAR the cheapest, is also the best I own, or have ever owned. IIRC I paid about $50 for minre on eBay, including postage. I paid another $50 for a new Manfrotto hexplate QR adaptor. You can use any quick release adaptor or just use the Titall's mounting screw.

BTW I bought the Tiltall to replace the tripod pictured in my self-portrait avatar. That one is a $200 Chinese knock-off of a VERY large Manfrotto model. It's well made and steady but, at 14 lbs, too heavy for me to carry. The Tiltall is half the weight, is just as steady, and is about the same height.

When I started off shooting I knew little about tri-pods and went to walmart and purchased a Targus it is a nice 56' tripod and will hold anything you have under 8lbs. It served me well and only cost 40 bucks, thy have a heavier one for 90 and a little more sturdy on the top but I just wanted to pipe in my two cents if your looking as a cheap part time tri-pod and you planning on caring it around with you this is a option.
